{Shops} Singapore

I’m not paid to rave about any shops here. Reviews are based on my personal experiences/transactions with the merchants. I try to support the local sellers as much as possible, but I shop A LOT online for the convenience, variety and better prices. Shops are not listed in any particular order of merit, etc.

I will be preparing a list of overseas merchants in a separate post next.

1. Quilts and Friends

2. Dreams In Quilts

3. Quilts N’ Calicoes

4. Needle and Thread

5. Moopie Fabrics (updated)

6. Golden Dragon Store

7. Sin Hin Chuan Kee

8. Daiso

10. Ban Soon Sewing Machine

1) Quilts and Friends

Business: Local Quilt Shop
The crew from Quilts and Friends is the same as the old quilt shop, Quilts and Sew Forth, that used operate at Tanglin Shopping Centre and then at Aliwal Street. QAFs is now at a new premise where there is so much more room to craft and shop!

Products and Services:
1. Classes and Workshops: This is where I took my Beginner’s quilt lesson. Brigitte conducts most of the classes and workshops and she does have lots of tips and tricks to share! Besides the beginners class, I attended the quick flying geese workshop, machine quilting class, trip around the world quilt workshop, stack and whack quilt workshop, dresden plate workshop, cathedral window quilt workshop, etc. I’m sure there are a couple more that I can’t recall here! :D
2. Fabrics: Japanese yarn-dyed, quilting cotton, felt (limited), panels, and flannel (limited).
3. Notions: I buy all my quilt battings (cotton/polyester, etc) and most of my needles here. Whatever you require to work on a quilt, you are sure to find them here. You can buy Synthrapol or Retayne here.
4. Sewing Machines: You can test Bernina, Brother and the latest Babylock’s Sashiko machines here. Tip: try to ask for a free machine sewing lesson when you purchase a machine from the shop

Likes: I love buying fabrics here because the girls have very good eyes for color. I especially appreciate Salinah’s help when she recommends co-ordinating fabrics for my new projects. I love the quilts hanging in the store and they inspire me to get started on my own versions. I always feel comfortable asking the girls about what batting is most suitable for the projects/quilting, and also instructions on how to use any of the notions.

Dislikes: There is hardly anything that I don’t like here. But main peeve would be the relative high prices/mark-ups. But when you include the value-add by the staff, you do feel that the pricier costs could be justified somewhat.

2) Dreams In Quilts

Business: Local Quilt Shop

Products and Services:
1. Classes and Workshops: As far as I know, DIQ does not have scheduled classes/workshops like QAFs. However, you can contact Rosie for personalised sewing lessons for any projects you have in mind. I have attended a few sessions with Rosie for sewing some home-decor projects.
2. Fabrics: DIQ carries mainly Japanese fabrics, yard-dyed, prints, linen, cotton-linen and cotton fabrics. You can find a wide variety of subtle Japanese hues here.
3. Notions: Lots of clover, Bag making notions, Gütermann threads, etc.
4. Sewing Machines: Here, you will find ALL Bernina sewing machines and you can test-run them as well. Rosie’s also the local distributor, so you will be able to send your Bernina to her for your servicing needs.

Likes: I like Rosie’s nice and genuine personality. She is also very flexible when it comes to lesson plans.

Dislikes: The shop is SMALL! You may also not get Rosie’s undivided attention when the shop is busy with customer or other students. Best to contact Rosie beforehand to book lesson times.

3) Quilts N’ Calicoes

Business: Local Quilt Shop

Products and Services:
1. Classes and Workshops: I have not attended any classes with QNC.
2. Fabrics: I have found some beautiful Free Spirit fabrics and lovely panels here. The fabrics here have a more modern/livelier vibe.
3. Notions: I have seen Oliver + S patterns here for sale.

Likes: I like the fabric selection and the grouping of the fabrics is very well thought-out.

Dislikes: High prices. I only shop here to buy an odd yard/FQ when I’m at Tanglin Mall (who can resist fabrics?).

1. Fabrics: Australian designer fabrics (e.g. Pippijoe),  Japanese Fabrics (e.g. Kokka, but limited), Home Decor Fabrics (Amy Butler!), and Michael Miller, Free Spirit, etc.
2. Notions: Pom poms and sewing patterns

Likes: Good selection, great prices (almost equivalent to buying overseas (incl. shipping/GST), secured online shopping with option of paypal/funds transfer payments, FREE shipping to local SG addresses (NAT also ships internationally), Fabrics are well-cut and very well packed, very prompt shipping and fast email response.

Dislikes: Nothing much, except that I would love to see a more complete collection for some of the lines (like Laura Gunn!)

5) Moopie Fabrics

Business: Local Fabric Shop – Estore

**UPDATE** Moopie Fabrics is closing the retail side of business. All fabrics going at S$8.50!

Products and Services:
1. Fabrics: Michael Miller, Robert Kaufman, Kokka, Lecien, etc.

Likes: Good selection, great prices (almost equivalent to buying overseas (incl. shipping/GST), Fabrics are well-cut and very well packed, very prompt shipping and fast email response, frequent sales/promotions that are informed via email.

Dislikes: Fabrics sell out quite quickly. There is no online store, so selection is sent to you via email, or uploaded to Flickr. This is no biggy, as the team responds to your emails very promptly.

6) Golden Dragon Store

Business: Local Crafting Supplies store

Products and Services:
1. Notions: Great for knitters, beaders and quilters. You can find almost ALL Clover products that are available in Singapore here. I love the comprehensive shelves of Clover notions available, from needles to marking tools.
2. Classes: I believe you can sign-up for classes here, though I have not attended any myself. I would prefer to do a class with a local quilt shop that have a good selection of good quality fabrics, than a retail centric shop like Golden Dragon.

Likes: Good variety of notions and crafty gadgets.

Dislikes: Location. Sorry, but I don’t like to shop at Chinatown because of the traffic and parking situation. It is convenient if you take the MRT, but I do find it painful to park at the old, crowded carpark.

7) Sin Hin Chuan Kee

Business: Local Crafting Supplies store

Products and Services:
1. Ribbons: There are 2 SHCK shops. The one at the beginning of Aliwal street is a treasure trove of ribbons! I bought loads of grosgrain ribbons and other notions from here before.
2. Threads: I like the prices of the silk threads that I buy for hand applique. And I have bought elastic threads for shirring here too.
3. Findings: There are A LOT of other notions and tools here like scissors, needle threaders, webbings, etc.
4. Zippers: The SHCK store at Textile center focuses more on Zippers and other dress-making essentials. You can also find interfacing here as well.

Likes: Good variety and at great prices. I love shopping here because it reminds me of the traditional shops that I visit with my mom in the 80s.

Dislikes: There are not many latest products or European/American brands. But I have to say they work well still. Visiting the store is like a trip down memory lane: the items in the store bring back memories of me peeking into my mom’s sewing box!

8) Daiso

Business: General Store

Products and Services:
1. Storage: I love the little organising boxes, trays and also baskets.
2. Cover Buttons: I noticed there are more cover buttons, as well as clutch purse frames stocked at Daiso
3. Gloves: I bought my ‘quilting gloves’ here for SG$2. The are meant as ladies’ driving gloves with little sticky dots on the palm-side of the gloves.

Likes: I love the variety of items at Daiso: From household to crafting to DIY hardware.

Dislikes: Quality is a problem for certain products. Not everything is worth S$2, and even if the ‘idea’ behind the gadget is great, sometimes I’m put off by the quality of the production/material.

Contact Details:
[Name] N.A.
[Address] Daiso SG – I visit the IMM store most often.

9) Spotlight

Business: International Crafting Supplies store

Products and Services:
1. Fabrics: I have bought some Flannel, baby muslin, home decor fabrics, etc
2. Notions: I have bought bicycle clips, binding snaps here before too.
3. Interfacing: Many different types of interfacing available here, as well as craft battings too.

Likes: Variety, accessibility

Dislikes: While the staff may be pleasant and helpful (most of the time, anyway), I have to remind them to try and cut along the grain or give an allowance or so, as there is a tendency for the staff to be snip happy and end up ruining the cut.

10) Ban Soon Sewing Machine

Business: Sewing Machine Shop

Products and Services:
1. Sewing Machines: BSSM is a tiny shop at Clementi, cramped with many sewing machines, overlockers, antique machines, etc. I bought my 1st sewing machine, a display model of a Singer quilting machine from here.
2. Notions and accessories: Needles, scissors, footer, etc… Whatever you need for machine sewing, I believe you can find them here
3. Servicing: Send your machine in for a servicing or assessment if you are planning to purchase a 2nd buy.

Likes: Flexibility: Read = available to a little bargaining (pay by cash, ask for accessories, needles, etc)

Dislikes: Nothing much to dislike, only disappointment is the lack of ALL models for a test-run.
