My name is Yvette and I’m a fabric-holic.
I live in Singapore, with my hubby, and 2 little
hooligans lovely children.
Any questions – about crafting and Singapore – please send me a mail at yvette[at]midnightcrafts[dot]net.
Why Midnight Crafts? Hubby & I are chronic late-sleepers. And for me, working late at night after the kids are asleep means that I can work on my craft (or blog) without little ones underfoot and emails/phones interrupting me.
Why Craft? I guess it was maternal instinct that drew me towards the quilting and sewing sides of things. When I was pregnant with my eldest child, I just wanted to sew a nice quilt for him, for the home and for everyone I know. Maybe its the ‘nesting’ instinct when you are with a child? Now, I’m not only quilting, but I’m making coasters, buntings, t-shirt appliques, crayon wallets, etc… I LOVE IT. Handmade stuffs rock!
Why Blog? I’m afraid I had some prejudices against bloggers and blog readers in the VERY beginning when EVERYONE were talking about blogs. But I found myself learning and getting inspired by a lot of creative folks out there who share their wealth of knowledge from their blogs. I also realised that I have very little to show for – after the work that I have done and given as gifts to friends – and I could have my own craft-diary. This is such a wonderful and easy way to share creative ideas with people all around the world!
In recent years, more local crafters have reached out through this site to ask me about the sewing scene in Singapore. It is definitely getting more exciting as I see new shops popping up in town and online! The work that these crafters shared with me are also wonderful!
Why Sell? The main motivation to set-up shop came from friends who liked what they saw that I made for my boy. So, by selling the crayon wallets and other goodies, I hope that people will be able to get their hands on something useful, something pretty, something handmade and unique for their loved ones without burning a hole in their pockets. We spent enough on diapers already! :p
Who taught you? My mom taught me to handsew and on her old treadle machine (part of her wedding gift from my paternal granny). That was many years back! But I’m re-learning my sewing muscles through trial & error, books and also from the ladies at my monthly quilt meeting. They are amazing quilters who make amazing show-quality stuff. Every time we meet, I get inspired by their work/shopping/ideas.
Hand or Machine sewing? I do both, actually. I’m handquilting on my oldest quilt WIP still and also Japanese kits. I really enjoy handpiecing, and they are great for me to sew on-the-go!
What’s coming up next? More Q&As, I suppose. Definitely more updates on my crafty escapades!
